Thieves of the Wood

Tyver av wood ligger i hjertet av Flandern fra 1700-tallet, og er et ganske godt periodedrama, selv om det faller litt for langt inn i melodramatiske farvann mot slutten av serien. For det meste skjønt, gjør showet godt å sjonglere sin sentrale cast av tegn, med Jan den mest likable ut gjengen. Med noen grusomme visuelle effekter og noen anstendig produksjonsdesign, er dette flamske dramaet absolutt nok til å garantere en klokke, selv om det er usannsynlig å tenne perioden drama scene.

Riktignok vet jeg ikke mye om denne perioden av historien, og det er fest hvorfor dramaet er så tiltalende. I hjertet av det selv ligger returnerende soldat Jan, som oppdager at korrupsjon er florerer i sin hjemby, delvis takket være syke og fattige eksil til skogene. Med en klar klasse dele så tidlig fungerer som drivstoff for konfliktene fremover, på den andre siden av gjerdet er Baru, en ny lensmann ivrig på å innsette reform og endringer. Den tredje og siste hovedhistorien dreier seg om Heloise og sammen forankrer denne trioen av karakterer i hovedsak dramaet til de vanlige tropene du forventer.

Det er hint av en Robin Hood-esque tomt på jobb her og gjennom hele serien dreier det meste av dramaet seg rundt en vei som bygges som fungerer som kjernen i konflikten for begge sider. Etter hvert som serien vokser, endres dette litt for å innlemme mer romantiske temaer, men det er et par fine vendinger sent som holder ting interessant. Jeg vil ikke gi bort for mye, men nok til å si at hvis du liker karakterdrama og såpeelementer, er Thieves of the Wood et ganske godt alternativ.

Estetisk sett ser showet flott ut. Det er en sterk kontrast mellom de rike og fattige her, bevisst vist gjennom ekstreme nærbilder av gjørme og smuss, mens brede, feiende bilder av det overdådige interiøret tilbyr det motsatte for de rike. Det er et subtilt triks, men en som fungerer bra for å forsterke temaene som spiller ut gjennom sesongen.

Når det gjelder kostyme og produksjonsdesign, gjør Thieves of the Wood det bra, og det er en reell innsats for å gjøre dette så autentisk som mulig. Tidlig er det et bestemt forbannelsesord som brukes som jeg måtte se opp for å sikre at det passet for tidsperioden, men utover det, gjør serien det bra for å holde ting konsekvent og troverdig.

Med anstendig grafikk og en uvanlig setting som ikke ofte vises, finner ikke Thieves of the Wood opp finne opp hjulet, men gjør en ganske god jobb med å holde ting engasjerende likevel. Hvis du er i humør for en periode drama, dette er et ganske godt tilbud, og mens jeg ikke var en massiv fan av den romantiske subplot, det er nok her til å gjøre for en unremarkable men ganske solid sesong av underholdning.
